District Police Chief of Farsi district of western Herat province and four other policemen were killed in a Taliban rocket attack early Monday, local officials.
One other policeman was injured in the attack.
The incident took place in Qaleen Bafa area, while the Police Chief, Shir Ahmad, was on his way to his office when the Taliban insurgents targeted his vehicle, said Sami Wafa, Head of Herat Governor Office.
“Colonel Shir Ahmad and four policemen were killed after their vehicle was struck by a Taliban rocket propelled grenade at around 8 a.m. in the morning,” he said.
The Taliban has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The casualties of Afghan security forces have increased recently as the forces prepare to takeover security responsibility. The foreign troops are projected to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of this year.
There are about 50,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan.
