KABUL: The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) informed yesterday the government had no plans to block the social networking Facebook website. MCIT Spokesman Nusrat Rahimi said that the National Security Council (NSC) had earlier decided to suspend the Facebook website. “The matter of blocking Facebook was on the agenda for the NSC meeting today but President Hamid Karzai was not in favor of the idea”. The ministry was also against the blocking of the Facebook, he said. Earlier, rumors were circulating that the government might block social networking website till the results of the presidential election were announced. Internet users in the country expressed grave concerns over the possible move. A user Mirwais Umarkhel has written in his status update on Facebook that banning the website would mean a last nail in the coffin of democracy and freedom of speech in the country.
Another Facebook user, Sayed Ahmad Shah Sadaat, said that freedom of speech was a major and positive development during the Karzai government and banning the Facebook would mean to reverse those gains. The Kabul Times
