KABUL: Dr. Abdullah Abdullah is in lead as the Independent Election Commission (IEC) announced yesterday the preliminary results of April 5 Presidential elections.
Addressing a press conference, IEC chairman Dr. Mohammad Yousuf Nuristani said that Dr. Abdullah secured 44.9 percent of the votes, followed by Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai who bagged 31.5 percent and Dr. Zalmai Rassoul with winning 11.10 percent stood at third position respectively.
Meantime, Abdul Rab Rassoul Sayaf garnered 7.1 percent, Qutbudin Helal 2.2 percent, Mohammad Shafiq Gul Agha Shirzai 1.6 percent, Daud Sultanzoi 0.5 percent and Hedayat Amin Arsala 0.2 percent of the votes in the preliminary results of the presidential polls, announced by Nuristani here. Chairman IEC also added that the preliminary results of the elections indicates that the elections will go into runoff between two frontrunners in the presidential race. Nevertheless, Dr. Nuristani added that the final results of the elections would be announced after the examinations of the complaints by the Election Complaints Commission, on 14th May this year.
